Burnt dust — usually normal, once a year

The first time the furnace runs each fall, dust that settled on the heat exchanger and burners burns off. It smells like scorched dust or a hot attic, lasts 20–30 minutes, and goes away. Open a window if it bothers you. If it keeps happening past the first day or two of the season, that is not dust anymore — something is wrong.

Burning plastic or electrical — shut it off

An acrid, electrical smell — like hot wiring or burning plastic — means a blower motor overheating, a failing capacitor, or wiring that is cooking. This one is a real fire risk. Turn the furnace off at the service switch and call. Do not let it run to "see if it clears."

Gas or rotten eggs — leave, then call

Natural gas is odorized to smell like rotten eggs specifically so you notice it. If you smell it near the furnace or anywhere in the house:

  1. Do not flip switches, light anything, or use the phone inside
  2. Get everyone out — leave the door open on the way
  3. Call your gas utility's emergency line from outside (PECO: 1-800-841-4141), then call us

A faint whiff right at the furnace that appears only when it starts can be normal burner ignition — but if you are unsure, treat it as gas. Nobody will fault you for calling.

Musty or dirty-sock smell — the ductwork, not the furnace

A musty smell when the blower runs is usually moisture in the ducts, a dirty evaporator coil, or a filter that has been wet. It is an air-quality issue, not a combustion one — annoying rather than dangerous, but worth fixing. Our indoor air quality page covers the options.

Oil smell — for oil-fired systems

A persistent fuel-oil smell near an oil furnace or boiler means a leak, a bad burner seal, or incomplete combustion — none of which fix themselves. Oil heat is common in the older borough stock around Pottstown and Berks County, and this one earns a service call the same day.

The short version

  • Dust, first cold day — normal, wait it out
  • Electrical/burning plastic — switch off, call
  • Gas/rotten eggs — leave, call the utility, then us
  • Musty — air-quality issue, schedule a look
  • Oil smell on oil heat — call same-day

Not sure which you are smelling? Call or text (267) 227-8115 — describing it over the phone is usually enough for us to tell you whether to shut it down.
